Credit Card Swapping Scam: Trader Loses ₹11 Lakh, Here’s How to Stay Safe

An Ahmedabad garment trader has approached the police after credit cards belonging to him and his family were allegedly misused in transactions worth around ₹10.52 lakh.

According to a Times of India report published on October 5, 2026, the 30-year-old trader had handed over several credit cards to three people who allegedly offered to clear the outstanding balances for a 3% commission.

The arrangement later became a problem when the trader reportedly learned that money credited to some of the cards was connected with fraud cases. He has since filed a complaint with Karanj police, and the allegations are under investigation.

The incident also raises an important question for cardholders: what happens when you allow another person to control your credit card?

What happened in the Ahmedabad credit card case?

According to the complaint reported by Times of India, the trader and his parents had multiple credit cards with outstanding balances.

The trader reportedly came into contact with three operators who offered a service in which they would deposit money against the outstanding card balances and take a 3% commission.

He handed over the cards.

Several transactions allegedly followed between December 2025 and May 2026.

The complaint alleges that after the money was credited, it was withdrawn through online portals or, in one instance, through a card-swiping machine.

The ₹11 lakh figure used in reports is a rounded figure. The transactions described in the complaint add up to approximately ₹10.52 lakh.

How did the trader find out?

The issue reportedly came to light in July 2026.

According to the report, Andhra Pradesh Police visited the trader's home on July 10 and informed him that some of the money credited to the family's cards was connected with fraud cases.

The complaint states that ₹4.37 lakh was recovered from the complainant under a panchnama.

The trader then questioned the people who had handled the cards. He later alleged that money linked to fraud had been routed through his family's credit cards before being withdrawn.

Bank statements and documents were subsequently submitted to Karanj police.

The complaint has been registered and the matter is being investigated. The allegations should therefore not be treated as established findings against the people named in the complaint.

What is a credit card swapping scam?

Credit card swapping can describe different forms of card misuse.

In a typical physical card-swap scam, a fraudster may secretly replace a person's genuine card with another card and later use the original.

The Ahmedabad case is different.

Here, the cards were reportedly handed over voluntarily as part of an arrangement to clear outstanding dues. The alleged misuse happened after another party gained control of the cards.

That distinction is useful for cardholders because fraud does not always begin with someone stealing a card. Giving another person control of your card can create its own risks.

Why handing over your credit card can be risky

A credit card is linked to a credit facility issued in your name. Transactions made using that card can therefore affect your finances and repayment obligations.

Cardholders should be particularly careful about sharing:

  • Credit card PIN

  • CVV

  • OTP

  • Internet banking password

  • Mobile banking password

  • UPI PIN

RBI's consumer guidance advises cardholders not to lend their cards and to keep sensitive payment credentials private.

An offer may sound useful when someone is struggling with a large outstanding balance, but handing over the card itself is unnecessary for normal credit card bill payments.

Warning signs to watch for

Be cautious when someone promises to solve your credit card problem unusually quickly.

Warning signs can include a person asking to keep your physical card, requesting an OTP or PIN, promising to clear a large outstanding balance for a small commission, or asking to route money through your card or bank account without clearly explaining its source.

Another warning sign is a promise to improve your CIBIL score immediately.

Credit scores are influenced by factors such as repayment history, outstanding debt, credit utilisation and credit enquiries. There is no legitimate shortcut that requires giving another person control of your credit card.

What should you do after an unauthorised credit card transaction?

If you notice a transaction you do not recognise, report it as soon as possible.

  1. Contact your card issuer: Use the bank's official app, website or customer-care number and report the transaction.

  2. Block the card if required: If card details may have been compromised, ask the issuer about blocking or replacing it.

  3. Call 1930: India's cyber financial fraud helpline can be used to report suspected financial cyber fraud.

  4. File an online complaint: Complaints can also be submitted through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.

  5. Keep the evidence: Save transaction messages, card statements, screenshots, emails, payment receipts and conversations connected with the incident.

RBI's framework for unauthorised electronic banking transactions considers circumstances including how the transaction happened and when the customer informed the bank. Reporting suspicious activity quickly is therefore important.

Struggling with credit card dues? Use official repayment options

Someone facing a large credit card bill may be tempted by an offer to clear it for a small commission. The Ahmedabad case shows why such arrangements deserve careful scrutiny.

Start with the card issuer.

Ask about the outstanding balance, applicable interest, EMI conversion and any repayment options available for your account.

If you are considering a personal loan to consolidate expensive credit card debt, compare the numbers before borrowing.

Eligible users looking for digital personal loan can also explore platforms such as Pocketly, subject to the applicable lending partner's eligibility, verification and underwriting requirements.

Before accepting a loan through Pocketly or any other platform, read the Key Fact Statement (KFS), check the regulated lender, APR, applicable fees, tenure and total repayment amount.

Taking another loan simply to keep moving debt from one place to another can make the situation harder. Borrowing should fit within a repayment plan.

What cardholders can take from this case

The Ahmedabad case is still under investigation, but it carries a useful warning for anyone dealing with credit card debt.

Keep your card under your control. Do not share OTPs, PINs or other confidential credentials. If repayment is becoming difficult, speak directly with the card issuer or use a regulated financial channel rather than giving an intermediary access to your card.

Most importantly, if an unfamiliar transaction appears, do not wait for the next statement. Report it immediately.
