What Is a Gratuity Calculator?
A gratuity calculator is an online financial tool that helps employees estimate the gratuity they may receive from their employer after completing the required period of service or when another qualifying event applies.
Instead of manually performing a gratuity computation, the calculator uses your wages and service period to estimate your benefit.
Pocketly's employee gratuity calculator can be useful when you are:
-
planning to resign from your current job;
-
approaching retirement;
-
comparing a new job offer;
-
calculating your expected employee benefits;
-

-
checking an estimate provided by your company; or
-
simply understanding how gratuity works in India.
The calculator is designed primarily for employees who want a quick gratuity amount calculation before making a financial decision.

Gratuity Calculation Formula in India
For a monthly-rated employee, the commonly applicable gratuity formula is:
Gratuity = Last Drawn Monthly Wages × 15 ÷ 26 × Eligible Years of Service
Under the Code on Social Security, gratuity is calculated at the rate of 15 days' wages for every completed year of service or part exceeding six months. For monthly-rated employees, the law specifies that 15 days' wages are calculated by dividing the monthly wage by 26 and multiplying it by 15.
Simple Gratuity Calculation Example
Suppose:
|
Particular |
Amount |
|
Last drawn monthly wages |
₹30,000 |
|
Completed service |
7 years 8 months |
|
Eligible service used for calculation |
8 years |
|
Formula |
₹30,000 × 15 ÷ 26 × 8 |
|
Estimated gratuity |
₹1,38,462 approximately |
So, the estimated gratuity would be approximately ₹1.38 lakh, subject to the applicable wage definition, employment conditions and final calculation by the employer.
How Are Years of Service Counted for Gratuity?
Service duration matters when performing a gratuity calc.
For the standard calculation, gratuity is payable for every completed year of service and for a part of a year in excess of six months.
For example:
|
Actual Service |
Service Used for Illustration |
|
5 years 4 months |
5 years |
|
5 years 6 months |
5 years |
|
5 years 7 months |
6 years |
|
8 years 3 months |
8 years |
|
8 years 9 months |
9 years |
This is why entering both years and months into an employee gratuity calculator can provide a more useful estimate than entering years alone.
Who Is Eligible for Gratuity in India?
For most regular employees, gratuity is generally associated with termination of employment after at least five years of continuous service, including circumstances such as resignation, retirement or superannuation.
However, five years of service is not required in some situations, including death, disablement and certain fixed-term employment cases. The Ministry also states that gratuity can become payable when a fixed-term employment contract expires.

For fixed-term employees, the Ministry's 2026 clarification says an FTE directly engaged by the employer becomes eligible after completing one year under the contract, subject to the applicable provisions.
What Salary Is Used for Gratuity Calculation?
This is one of the most important inputs in any salary gratuity calculator.
The current wage framework includes basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance, if applicable. Under the wage definition applicable from 21 November 2025, certain excluded allowances exceeding the statutory 50% threshold can also affect wages used for statutory calculations.
For this reason, the calculator field should preferably be labelled:
Last Drawn Monthly Wages for Gratuity Calculation
rather than simply:
Basic Salary
This will make Pocketly's calculator more accurate and more future-proof than calculators still displaying only an outdated “Basic + DA” instruction.

Maximum Gratuity Amount in India
The Ministry of Labour & Employment currently states that the notified maximum gratuity is ₹20 lakh.
However, an employee may sometimes have better gratuity terms under an employment contract, agreement or award. The applicable employment terms should therefore also be checked before relying solely on an online calculation.
Why Use Pocketly's Gratuity Calculator?
A good gratuity calculator India page should do more than return one number. It should help you understand what that number means for your broader financial position.
With Pocketly, you can use financial tools to better plan your:
-
salary and employment benefits;
-
monthly cash flow;
-
loan repayments;
-
emergency expenses;
-
upcoming EMIs;
-
short-term financial commitments; and
-
major life or career changes.
You can also compare your obligations using a personal loan EMI calculator before borrowing instead of looking only at the loan amount.
Gratuity vs Salary – What Is the Difference?
Your monthly salary is compensation for the work you perform during employment.
Gratuity is an employment benefit that may become payable when qualifying employment conditions are met.
|
Salary |
Gratuity |
|
Paid regularly |
Generally paid when qualifying employment ends |
|
Based on employment compensation |
Based partly on eligible service |
|
Used for monthly living expenses |
Often received as a lump sum |
|
Continues while employed |
Usually linked to cessation or specified events |
Your gratuity should therefore not normally be treated as a replacement for your regular monthly income.
Planning Your Money After Receiving Gratuity
A gratuity payment can be a meaningful financial amount. Before spending it, consider dividing it between different priorities.
1. Emergency Fund
Keep sufficient money available for essential expenses if you are between jobs.
2. Existing Debt
Review outstanding credit cards, EMIs and personal loans.
3. Upcoming Expenses
Consider rent, medical expenses, relocation, education and other near-term requirements.
4. Avoid Unnecessary Borrowing
Receiving gratuity does not automatically mean taking additional credit is appropriate. Compare interest rates, APR, processing fees, tenure and total repayment before taking a new loan.
5. Keep Some Liquidity
Avoid committing the entire gratuity amount immediately if your future income is uncertain.

FAQs
What is a gratuity calculator online?
A gratuity calculator online estimates the gratuity an employee may receive using applicable wages and eligible years of service.
How do I calculate gratuity?
For many monthly-rated employees, the calculation can be expressed as:
Last Drawn Monthly Wages × 15 ÷ 26 × Eligible Years of Service.
Is gratuity calculated on basic salary or gross salary?
Use the wages applicable under the current gratuity and statutory wage rules rather than automatically entering gross salary. Since the wage framework changed from 21 November 2025, certain salary components may need to be considered differently.
Is gratuity available after 5 years?
For regular employees, five years of continuous service is generally required for gratuity on resignation or retirement. Certain exceptions apply, including death, disablement and fixed-term employment situations.
Is 4 years and 6 months eligible for gratuity?
Eligibility and the calculation of completed service are separate questions. Do not assume that a partial fifth year automatically satisfies the statutory five-year eligibility condition. Check the applicable employment circumstances and legal requirements.
Is 6 months rounded to one year for gratuity?
The statutory wording refers to a part of a year in excess of six months. Therefore, the calculator should round up when the additional service exceeds six months rather than automatically treating exactly six months as another full year.
What is a gratuity eligibility calculator?
A gratuity eligibility calculator helps you understand whether your service duration and employment circumstances may satisfy general gratuity conditions while also estimating the amount.
Can I use the calculator as a company gratuity calculator?
Yes. HR teams and employees can use the company gratuity calculator for an indicative estimate, although the company's payroll and legal calculation should determine the final payable amount.
What is the maximum gratuity amount?
The Ministry of Labour & Employment currently states that the maximum notified gratuity amount is ₹20 lakh.
Is Pocketly's gratuity calculator free?
Yes. The Pocketly gratuity calculator online can be provided as a free financial planning tool without requiring users to take a loan.
Does using the gratuity calculator affect my credit score?
No. Simply using a gratuity calculator does not involve a credit enquiry.
